Ronaldo showed what he can do – Bale

The Portugal star defied concerns over his fitness by scoring both goals in the Uefa Super Cup final and his team-mate is confident it could be the start of a trophy clean sweep

Real Madrid attacker Gareth Bale believes Cristiano Ronaldo proved his fitness and quality with a virtuoso performance in the Uefa Super Cup win over Sevilla.

The Portugal star went into Tuesday’s encounter in Cardiff with concerns over the knee injury which affected the end of his 2013-14 season and his World Cup campaign, as well as severely limiting his pre-season game time this summer.

However, the 29-year-old scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Unai Emery’s side to seal the trophy for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, and team-mate Bale feels it could be the first of many titles this season.

“Cristiano showed what he can do. The most important thing was we won but to be back in Cardiff is a dream come true, it’s fantastic,” the Welshman told ITV after the match.

“Everybody comes to Real Madrid to win trophies and play with the best players in the world. We’re expected to win trophies. Hopefully we can win every one this season.”

James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos made their competitive debuts on Tuesday and Bale is confident the duo will settle quickly into the side.

“The most important thing for us was to get the job done. We played well, obviously it’ll take a little time for everyone to settle in but we gelled as a team and we’ve got plenty of time to improve.”
