Gareth Bale described Real Madrid’s Super Cup win as a “perfect evening” following their 2-0 success over Sevilla.

The Cardiff showpiece was billed as Bale’s triumphant homecoming after his goal helped secure the Champions League against Atletico Madrid in May.

Bale provided an assist for Cristiano Ronaldo’s opening goal at the Cardiff City Stadium before the Portuguese star doubled Madrid’s lead in the second half and helped Bale clinch his third title as a Real Madrid player.

“For me personally it was a great night,” Bale told the press. “To be home in my home town and to win the trophy in Cardiff has made it a perfect evening.

“My family and friends were here so I had a lot of requests for tickets but the most important thing for me, the whole team and Real Madrid was we won the Super Cup trophy.”

The Super Cup saw debuts for World Cup winner Toni Kroos and the star of the show in Brazil, James Rodriguez. Competition for places at Santiago Bernabeu is more intense than ever and Bale sees the benefits of having so many renowned stars in the team.

“It’s always good to have options,” he said. “It makes competition more fierce and obviously performances will go up.

“They’ve settled in very well.  It’s great to have them both here. They’ve done very well tonight and we’re looking forward to the season.

In the aftermath of Madrid’s win, talk immediately turned to what the side can achieve in the coming season after goals from Bale helped Madrid claim Champions League and Copa del Rey glory last term.

“We know how good we can be and how good we are,” Bale said. “We need to keep working hard on the training pitch, keep working hard on the pitch and hopefully we can keep our performances up.

“In sport anything can happen, we’re excited and we feel confident, we’ll try our hardest to win every trophy and go from there.”

Real Madrid take on Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Supercopa on Tuesday August 19.
