Getafe Defender Marc Cucurella Denies Racially Abusing Real Madrid’s Eder Militão

?Getafe defender Marc Cucurella has denied allegations claiming he racially abused Real Madrid centre back Eder Militão during his side’s 3-0 defeat on Saturday afternoon.

Videos began to circulate on social media which appeared to show Cucurella calling Militão a ‘f***ing monkey’ during a heated exchange between the pair.

The 21-year-old dismissed these claims after the match however, stating on Twitter that he told Militão to ‘shut your f***ing mouth’, and did not use a racial slur of any kind.

“I want to make it clear that at no time did I insult or belittle Militão,” Cucurella wrote.

“My words were ‘cierra el p*** pico’ (shut your f***ing mouth).

“I apologise if anyone was offended by this.

“This is the only statement I have made and the only one I will make about it.”

It appears that Cucurella’s use of the word ‘pico’ (mouth) had been misinterpreted as ‘mico’ (monkey), which led to the uproar surrounding the incident.

Madrid cruised to a 3-0 victory over Getafe in their La Liga return following the winter break, as goals from Raphael Varane and Luka Modric took Los Merengues back to the top of the table. Barcelona’s 2-2 draw with Espanyol means the two rivals are now neck-and-neck at the La Liga summit.

Militao was making a rare start for Zinedine Zidane’s side against the Azulones, having made only six league appearances prior to Saturday’s win. It is believed the Portuguese defender has finally earned the trust of his French coach, who is prepared to give him a run in the heart of Madrid’s defence.

Los Blancos now travel to Saudi Arabia, where they will compete in the new-look Supercopa de España against Valencia on Wednesday evening. The winner of the semi-final will then face either Barcelona or Atlético Madrid on Sunday in the final of the domestic competition.
