Karanka: Champions League is the most important

The Real Madrid assistant coach has made the club’s priorities clear in terms of competitions, but insists Los Blancos will still play to win in the Spanish top flight

Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka has revealed the Champions League now takes “centre-stage” after they thumped Sevilla 4-1 on Saturday.

Priority was immediately refocused to their home encounter against Manchester United, despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick-inspired rout of the visitors at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“We have shown we still want to win every league game,” Karanka told reporters after the match.

“However, the Champions League takes centre-stage now.”

Ronaldo was hauled off with 20 minutes to go, preserving the Portuguese superstar’s energy reserves ahead of the fixture against his former side.

“Ronaldo’s fine. He works hard and has to play. He deserves it [the hat-trick],” continued defender Pepe.

“The team works hard every day. Today, we went all out. Every game is special, but on Wednesday we will have to keep [our form] up.”

The centre-back was deployed as an unorthodox central midfielder on the night in the wake of Gonzalo Higuain’s sending off, and he confirmed his readiness to perform the role again in midweek.

He concluded: “I’m happy to be back, and do not think playing in midfield against Manchester Uited to be an experiment.”

Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla: Ronaldo fires warning to Man Utd with formidable hat-trick

Cristiano Ronaldo warmed up for his eagerly anticipated clash against former club Manchester United with an inspirational performance to lead Real Madrid to a 4-1 victory over Sevilla at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

The Portuguese international struck his 20th career Madrid hat trick and assisted another, as los Blancos got back to winning ways in la Liga, after their 1-0 reverse at Granada last weekend.

Ronaldo teed up Karim Benzema to bundle home his 50th Liga goal, before taking matters into his own hands with a stunning second from just outside the box before the half hour mark.

The 28-year-old continued his deadly display in the second half, plundering two more goals prior to his withdrawal to a thunderous ovation. Gonzalo Higuain and Hedwiges Maduro were both sent off before Manu Del Moral scored with two minutes remaining to provide a crumb of consolation for the visitors.

Diego Lopez began in goal against the club he left in January as Jose Mourinho rang the changes, fielding Kaka and Michael Essien in midfield, while Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain were given a rare run out together in the starting XI.

It was not the most enterprising start from either side yet Madrid managed to take the lead 18 minutes in. Ronaldo raced onto a long ball over the top to drill across the six yard box, and Fernando Navarro’s attempts to clear instead played the ball right into Benzema’s path a yard out.

Despite not appearing to be 100 percent fit, Ronaldo was the most decisive player on the pitch, and doubled the hosts’ advantage in stunning fashion. A step-over took Maduro out of the equation, and allowed the forward to arrow a fantastic effort inside the far post.

Sevilla finally made significant inroads into Madrid territory just after the half hour mark when Jesus Navas gained a step on Fabio Coentrao out wide, and centred for Jose Reyes, whose low effort was smothered confidently by Lopez.

But it was the best chance of a bland first half for the Andalusians, and Mourinho could have seen his side go out of sight had Beto’s awkward punch out fallen more kindly after Ronaldo’s free kick was too hot to handle.

And within seconds of the restart, the game was put to bed. A routine header backwards was misjudged horribly by Federico Fazio, allowing Ronaldo to steal in behind and slot home the home side’s third goal.

Ronaldo was not done, and in electrifying fashion, completed his hat-trick just before the hour mark. After a Reyes free-kick was cleared, the Portuguese sprinted the entire length of the pitch, spread to Higuain, continued his run into the box, and knocked the return ball home from close range.

Ronaldo was withdrawn to a rapturous reception from the home fans, and he was soon unwillingly followed off the pitch by Higuain, who was shown his marching orders 66 minutes in after picking up his second yellow card for a late clip on Navarro.

Sevilla’s numerical advantage lasted barely a quarter of an hour as Maduro was also shown his second booking for a lazy late challenge on Michael Essien just outside the area.

The visitors would pull one back late on with a tidy finish from Manu, but it mattered little as the damage had long been done by the rampaging Ronaldo.

Aspas reveals Barcelona admiration

The 25-year-old striker has praised the Liga leader’s style of football and admitted he faces a tough task to be selected by Spain

Iago Aspas has revealed that he holds a soft spot for Barcelona, after admitting to have raised his children as fans of the Catalan giants, but insists his immediate focus lies with Celta Vigo.

The forward has impressed in his debut season as a Liga player, scoring eight times in 22 appearances for the newly-promoted Galicians, and his displays have reportedly courted the interest of numerous sides in England.

“I was a [Real] Madrid fan when I was a kid, but now I like the football that Barca plays. All my children are Barca fans,” Aspas told El Pais.

“It is very difficult to make the [Spain] squad,” he added. “They are best team in the world in the best era of football.

“A decade ago, I could perhaps even stick my head [into contention], but now it is much harder. Their style of play suits my game.”

Despite the rave reviews, a barren spell of four matches in front of goal has led sections of the media claiming that Aspas’ mindset was affected by speculation surrounding his future in the January transfer window.

However, while he did concede that Celta had spoken to other clubs about his services, the youth product is adamant that his level of commitment to his side’s cause remains the same.

“I know Celta have been in contact with other teams, but my performance levels have not dropped,” Aspas added.

“Many lies were spread, including one that claimed if Chelsea came along, I would refuse to play for Celta. If only they knew how much I love football!”

Ronaldo will not be rested, claims Emery

The Sevilla boss is looking forward to Saturday’s league encounter with Real Madrid and expects Jose Mourinho to play his strongest team

Sevilla coach Unai Emery expects his Real Madrid colleague Jose Mourinho to field a full-strength team in this weekend’s Primera Division encounter.

The Santiago Bernabeu side lock horns with Manchester United in the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday, but the 41-year-old is certain that they will not rest any stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo.

“The Real Madrid team doesn’t change much from game to game,” emery said at a press conference.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is rarely rested. I don’t remember it happening.”

Despite Madrid’s poor form of late, Emery went on to warn his players of the threat posed by the champions on their own turf.

“With all the problems they can cause you, the good players they have and the fact that they’re at home, Madrid should be clear favourites on paper.”

The match at the Bernabeu kicks off at 22:00CET.
