De Gea comes of age for Manchester United in career-defining show of strength

The 22-year-old goalkeeper delivered his greatest performance yet for the Old Trafford outfit at the Santiago Bernabeu, helping the Red Devils to an impressive 1-1 draw

This was a test of nerve for David de Gea and one which he passed with flying colours. The goalkeeper was not the centre of attention in the build-up to this tie but his performance was always likely to be crucial and, to Manchester United’s delight, that proved the case for all the right reasons.

Goalkeeping has long been a problem for Sir Alex Ferguson – after Peter Schmeichel’s departure it took the manager six years to solve his woes in between the posts by signing Edwin van der Sar, who helped in 2008 to deliver the club’s first, and so far only, Champions League success since the great Dane’s final appearance on that night in Barcelona.

It looked as if a similar problem might face Ferguson when neither De Gea nor Anders Lindegaard grasped the No.1 jersey convincingly after the Spaniard was captured for around £17 million, the most a British club had ever paid for a goalkeeper. But now, handed a run of games and, importantly, the confidence that comes with that trust, De Gea has started to live up to his considerable price tag.

This was his return to his home city, but not to the familiar surroundings of the Vicente Calderon and Atletico Madrid. De Gea has played in one capital derby at the Santiago Bernabeu before but as significant an occasion as that must have been on his 20th birthday, this was even bigger. He set the tone in the opening minutes, producing arguably his best save of the match by flinging himself across goal to palm Fabio Coentrao’s on to the post.

United only dropped deeper and deeper as the match wore on, and De Gea’s evening became increasingly hectic as a result. Ferguson had promised to attack before the match and seemed true to his word when he named Shinji Kagawa, Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck in his starting line-up, but the latter’s opening goal, even if quickly cancelled out by Cristiano Ronaldo, gave them a platform to sit tight and hold on. They would not have done so without their goalkeeper.

Coentrao was denied for a second time when De Gea leapt across his goal to block the left-back’s shot with his legs, and a drive by Angel di Maria that might have created a dangerous rebound was clutched securely. Occasionally, questions have been asked of De Gea’s tendency to palm shots back out into the danger zone in front of him but there were no spillages on this night.

For all the brilliance of the players in front of them, the first leg of this tie rested on the two goalkeepers. Diego Lopez made several similarly vital stops to prevent United from completing a classic smash-and-grab, turning one Van Persie shot onto the crossbar before palming another of the Dutchman’s drives wide of the goal.

It is easy to focus on the importance of Ronaldo, Van Persie and the other stars littered throughout these two teams but this competition has frequently been influenced by great goalkeeping. Petr Cech was magnificent last season for Chelsea and Jerzy Dudek’s incredible double save for Liverpool in the 2005 final lives long in the memory. On this evidence, Sir Alex would be forgiven for wondering if De Gea might give an imperfect United team a real chance.

Ronaldo: We can win at Old Trafford

The Portuguese forward is confident about his side’s second leg chances in England, while reaffirming his affection for his former club after refusing to celebrate his goal

Cristiano Ronaldo remains optimistic about Real Madrid’s prospects of making the Champions League quarter finals after their 1-1 draw against Manchester United in the first leg of their tie on Wednesday.

An enthralling contest saw both sides score a goal apiece in the first half, though the Red Devils’ away goal means that they hold a slender advantage for the second leg at Old Trafford.

But Ronaldo refuses to be daunted despite his side needing to score in England, telling journalists post-match: “At Old Trafford we can win, we always have the initiative to try to win.”

“It was a well-played match. Manchester United are very strong defensively, but we created problems for them. Tonight we missed a few goals, but we do not worry. [The tie] is all open. “

The Portugal international scored on the half hour mark to cancel out Danny Welbeck’s opener, but refused to celebrate, a decision he says was born out of his respect and affection for his former club.

“I did not want to celebrate the goal out of respect, as I played there for six years. I grew up there, and I have a special affection [for Manchester United].

Both teams will lock horns once again for the return leg in three weeks, though Madrid have the small matter of two clashes against arch-rivals Barcelona before making the trip to Manchester.

Real Madrid 1-1 Manchester United: Ronaldo leveller leaves tie perfectly poised

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his first appearance against Manchester United with a goal, but Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw in an enthralling first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Danny Welbeck opened the scoring for the Premier League leaders with a 20th minute header to deliver United a crucial away goal.

Ten minutes later, Ronaldo made sure of the headlines as he equalised with a header of his own to score his 37th goal of the season and set up a finely balanced second leg when Madrid travel to Old Trafford on March 5.

Ronaldo was low-key in his celebrations as he came up against United for the first time since leaving for Madrid in a world record £80 million deal in 2009, but he could not find a second goal as the Spanish giants’ prospects of a landmark tenth European title were dented.

Robin van Persie almost made it a perfect night for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side 18 minutes from time but was denied twice in matter of seconds – first by the crossbar and then Xabi Alonso’s goalline clearance.

As these two heavyweights went head-to-head in the tie of the round, this end-to-end game delivered on the palpable pre-match expectation – with neither side able to deliver an early knock out blow.

United, though, will be the happier of the two sides, with Ferguson rewarded for the bravery of his attacking line-up, even if he may want to share his post-match bottle of wine with his goalkeeper David De Gea, who made a series of fine saves to keep Madrid at bay.

There was a carnival atmosphere in the Spanish capital throughout the day as thousands of United fans soaked up the atmosphere with lager and tapas in the city’s squares, pubs and bars.

The anticipation was reflected inside the Bernabeu, where the teams were greeted by a wall of noise as the Madrid fans unfurled banners and flags, while their United fans sang their hearts out high in the Madrid sky.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson made his intentions clear by fielding an attacking quartet of Van Persie, Welbeck, Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa while captain Nemanja Vidic was rested from the squad entirely as he recovers from a knee injury.

Real Madrid sprung no surprises in their starting line-up, with French defender Raphael Varane replacing Pepe at centre-back and Mourinho picking his first-choice midfield and attack.

Both managers spoke before kick-off about the attacking traditions of their clubs and sent their players on to the pitch to put on a show, with the attacking freedom – and suspect defending – evident in a breathless first half.

Fabio Coentrao almost put the hosts ahead after just five minutes but his right-footed shot towards from 16 yards was wonderfully tipped on to the far post by United goalkeeper David De Gea with the merest fingertip.

United are no strangers to the big occasion and after settling in to the game, they took the lead with their first real opportunity of the game in the 20th minute with the easiest of goals as they took advantage of Real’s fragility from set-pieces.

Rooney whipped in a corner from the left and as the home defenders stood and watched each other, Welbeck rose to head into the bottom corner to send the 4,000 United supporters into delirium.

Yet Real Madrid responded and put United on the back foot as Ronaldo and Mezut Ozil in particular caused the visitors problems with their movement in the final third.

On the half-hour mark, Ronaldo levelled the scoreline with a trademark header. Di Maria played in an inviting cross from the left and the Portuguese rose high, craned his neck and headed the ball into the corner.

Both teams continued to search for a second goal, Welbeck flicking an inventive effort just wide from a van Persie cross before Ozil forced De Gea into a sharp save after collecting a raking 60-yard pass by Xabi Alonso.

The action continued after the break, with Di Maria firing just wide before referee Felix Brych infuriated the United bench by waving away appeals for a foul by Varane on Patrice Evra when the United captain would have been through on goal.

On the hour mark, De Gea again denied Madrid the lead, producing an orthodox save with his feet to kick away Coentrao’s volley when United right-back Rafael again fell asleep defensively.

At the other end, van Persie went agonisingly close for United twice in the space of a minute, first seeing his cracking right-footed shot cannon off the crossbar via the faintest glove from Diego Lopez, then the Dutchman’s scuffed volley beat the Madrid goalkeeper but was cleared off the line by Alonso as it trickled towards the net.

There was still time for Ronaldo to fizz a trademark free-kick just over the crossbar from 35 yards but United held on for a result that surely leaves them favourites to progress to the quarter-finals.

TEAM NEWS: Varane in ahead of Pepe for Real Madrid against Man Utd

The 19-year-old centre-back returns to the heart of los Blancos’ defence while Nemanja Vidic does not even make the bench for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side for tonight’s game

Jose Mourinho has chosen to include Raphael Varane alongside Sergio Ramos in the centre of Real Madrid’s defence for their Champions League clash against Manchester United this evening.

The young Frenchman had been struggling with a hamstring injury in recent weeks, but starts tonight ahead of Raul Albiol and Pepe.

Elsewhere Xabi Alonso shakes off a groin injury to start in the double pivot with Sami Khedira in los Merengues’ midfield.

Up front Karim Benzema is preferred to Gonzalo Higuain, while Diego Lopez continues in goal in the absence of the injured Iker Casillas.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria make the attacking three that will support Benzema.

For Manchester United, Nemanja Vidic misses out because of injury, with Jonny Evans partnering Rio Ferdinand at centre-back for the English side.

Rafael is handed the task of marking Cristiano Ronaldo, while the Red Devils start with three attacking players in the form of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck.

Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): Lopez; Arbeloa, Ramos, Varane, Coentrao; Khedira, Alonso; Di Maria, Ozil, Ronaldo; Benzema

Sir Alex Ferguson tasks 'fearless' Rafael with stopping Ronaldo

Manchester United and Real Madrid face each other at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night, with the former Old Trafford star playing against his old team for the first time

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Rafael will be the player tasked with stopping Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo when the two European giants face each other on Wednesday night.

Sir Alex’s side face the Liga champions at the Santiago Bernabeu, with the match representing the first time former United man Ronaldo has played against the club with whom he made his name.

Although behind Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in the Liga scoring charts, Ronaldo has been in superb form this season with 24 goals, however, Sir Alex believes Rafael will be fearless in the face of the Portugal star.

Speaking to MUTV, Ferguson said: “The responsibility will be with Rafael. Rafael’s maturity this season has been fantastic.

“Obviously Robin van Persie has been sensational but, outside that, Rafa and Michael Carrick are having their best seasons ever.

“He’s Brazilian so he doesn’t fear a thing. I trust him and have faith in him tonight.”

Since selling Ronaldo for £80 million, Sir Alex believes the Portugal international has developed even further but adds that if any team know how to stop him, it is United.

“He’s flourished since he’s come to Madrid,” the 71-year-old said. “You’d have to be stupid not to respect his goalscoring record. But if one team knows about Ronaldo it’s us.

“We had him for six years so we know everything he can do on a football pitch. We probably have an advantage in that respect, when it comes to facing Ronaldo.”
