La Liga President ‘Convinced’ Season Will Be Completed Despite Coronavirus Disruption

La Liga president Javier Tebas has said he remains ‘convinced’ the season will be concluded, despite the ongoing COVID-19 disruption. 

Football across Europe has been brought to a grinding halt by the pandemic, with ?La Liga joining virtually all sporting authorities across the continent in pressing pause to slow the spread of the virus. 

In a wider context, the entire nation has gone into a ‘state of alarm’ for the next two weeks, and with an end to the situation not yet on the horizon, it looks uncertain when – or if – the season will be allowed to finish. 

UEFA are to hold a meeting on Tuesday in which they will discuss possibilities to aid clubs, and it’s widely reported that they will postpone Euro 2020 to provide clubs with a few extra weeks in which to end the campaign over the summer.

But while the solution is a long way from clear at this stage in the rapidly developing situation, Tebas remains confident the season will conclude. 

Mis-translations have quoted the president as having a pessimistic outlook on the situation, but speaking to Spanish radio station Cope (as relayed by ?SPORT), he said: “It is not yet the moment to debate whether the season will end or not, but I believe that we are going to finish LaLiga.

“Let’s see what happens [at the UEFA meeting]. I think the competition will be able to finish, but this is not the time to talk about this. 

?”I have contacts with Italy or Germany. Let’s wait until Tuesday, the UEFA meeting and the decisions that are made, but I am convinced that we are going to finish the season.”

?Valencia recently confirmed five players and staff had ?tested positive for Coronavirus, so it’s easy to see why there remains a sense of caution and alarm about resuming the season any time soon.
