Ronaldo: Copa defeat could boost Real Madrid

The Ballon d’Or winner hopes to see his side come back even stronger after they were beaten 4-2 on aggregate by city rivals Atletico Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo believes Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey defeat could be a blessing in disguise as they aim for Liga and Champions League glory.

Two goals from Fernando Torres ensured a 2-2 draw at Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday, ensuring Atletico Madrid’s place in the next round after a 4-2 aggregate win over their city rivals.

The result caps a frustrating start to 2015 for Madrid, who saw their winning run ended with defeat at Valencia before their disappointing Copa exit, but Ronaldo feels the loss may inspire them to recapture their very best form in the coming weeks.

“We must thank the support of the fans. It was awesome. I apologise on behalf of the group. Now we have to move on,” Ronaldo, who scored Madrid’s second on the night, told reporters.

“Real Madrid is the best club in the world and always want to win, but sometimes it’s good to have one step back and take two forward.

“Now we have to work hard during this time and come back stronger. I’m sure the team and I will be perfect in two to three weeks.

“We wanted to win the cup, but La Liga and the Champions League are more important for us.”

Next up for Real Madrid is a trip to Getafe on Sunday.
