Khedira: Germany sprit must be as strong as Madrid’s

The Blancos star says his national team need to show the same togetherness as his club side did during their successful Champions League campaign last term

Germany midfielder Sami Khedira says the spirit in his country’s camp must match that of his club side, Real Madrid, when they beat city rivals Atletico 4-1 to claim their long-awaited tenth Champions League in May.

A 4-0 demolition of Portugal in Salvador saw Joachim Low’s side got off to the perfect start in their World Cup Group G campaign on Monday.

And the 27-year-old used the example set by club-mate Asier Illarramendi to convey the sort of atmosphere that can see Germany build on their momentum.

“We must help each other on and off the pitch,” Khedira told Bild.

“My biggest competitor [for a place in the Madrid ream], Illarramendi, came to me before the [Champions League final] and said, ‘you earned it’.”

“When you feel comfortable you go on to the pitch and can concentrate fully on your task.”

The former Stuttgart man, who suffered an cruciate ligament injury in November and was at one point facing a race to make it back in time for the World Cup, also spoke of the need to get behind captain Phillip Lahm.

“We have a very good set-up,” he said.

“There must be a leader, that’s Philipp. But he can’t do it alone.

“That’s why he needs a few players by his side, who follow him and help the team to grow together.”

Germany will continue their group campaign on Saturday when they meet Ghana in Fortaleza.
