Di Maria: All-Madrid final shows strength of Spanish football

The Argentine is proud that La Liga’s finest have reasserted themselves after last year’s all-German final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund

Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria believes that Saturday’s Champions League final clash with city rivals Atletico underlines the strength of Spanish football.

Some pundits argued that last year’s tournament decider between Bundesliga duo Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund signalled a shift in power within the European game.

However, Di Maria feels the fact that La Liga’s finest have reasserted their supremacy this term.

“I think a ‘Spanish final’ shows the development of Spanish football, the power which it has in the last years,” the Argentina international told reporters on Monday.

“It is going to be a nice and tough final against Atletico Madrid and we will try our best.”

Meanwhile, Di Maria’s team-mate, Alvaro Morata, admitted that the game is of special significance to him given he is a Madrid native.

“I think it is a big joy for Spanish football and for the Madrid region,” the striker stated. “I feel so proud, I was born here and it is going to be so nice.

“I think the final will be very competitive. Two teams which have been very good, especially in this competition. Hopefully, we will win.”
