The promising youngster faces a spell on the sidelines because of a neck injury following a nasty collision with Cristiano Ronaldo at the Vicente Calderon
Atletico Madrid defender Javier Manquillo is set to undergo further tests after suffering whiplash in Tuesday’s 2-0 Copa del Rey defeat to Real Madrid.
The 19-year-old was forced from the field in the 44th minute following a collision with Cristiano Ronaldo in the second leg of the semi-final tie, as Diego Simeone’s side suffered a 2-0 defeat that saw them lose 5-0 on aggregate to the city rivals.
Manquillo landed awkwardly after an aerial battle with the Portugal international, landing on his face and placing considerable pressure on his neck.
“The posterior part of the medical tests that he underwent confirm that Javier Manquillo suffers whiplash with normal radiologic tests,” read an Atletico statement.
“A neurological examination came out normal and he has been admitted to the hospital for observations.”
Tuesday’s encounter was only Manquillo’s sixth appearance of the season as he has mainly been warming the bench for Atleti so far this term.
