The former Real Sociedad midfielder says that his Blancos team-mate has “done more than enough” to claim the game’s most prestigious individual honour
Cristiano Ronaldo should be crowned the king of football at Monday’s Fifa Ballon d’Or awards, according to Real Madrid colleague Asier Illarramendi.
The 28-year-old Portuguese is coming off the back of an incredible year, having scoring a total of 69 goals for Los Blancos across 2013, and is odds on to claim the prestigious prize.
“He’s done more than enough to merit the trophy.” Illarramendi told his club’s official website. “He’s the favourite to win for me and for all of Real Madrid.”
In spite of Ronaldo’s individual triumphs, Madrid failed to win a trophy last year and currently sit third in La Liga, five points behind Barcelona and Atletico.
However, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side facing Espanyol in Catalunya this weekend, Illarramendi is well are that they have an opportunity to propel themselves right back into the title race given the top two will square up at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday night.
“It will be a tough away game but we can’t lose more ground,” the former Real Sociedad starlet stated.
“One of Barca and Atletico is probably going to lose, so the important thing is that we win.”
