Benzema: A weight has been lifted

The France star finally brought an end to his barren spell after going 1224 minutes without scoring a single goal when he netted in les Bleus’ emphatic win over Australia

France striker Karim Benzema admits the pressure of not scoring for his country was taking its toll.

The 25-year-old had previously gone 1224 minutes without finding the net for Les Blues prior to his second-half strike during the 6-0 friendly win over Australia at the Parc des Princes.

After also enduring an indifferent start to the season with Real Madrid, Benzema felt that a lot of pressure had finally been lifted following his goal.

”I scored that goal which had been weighing a little on my head,” he told TF1 after the match.

He went on to reflect on France’s performance throughout the match, underlining the nature of the comprehensive victory should inspire confidence from their fans.

France host Finland next in their final World Cup qualifier on Tuesday and will need a win if they are to stand a chance of beating Spain to top spot in Group I.
