Following the elimination of the big two in Spain, the LFP has decided to bring the league’s penultimate round of fixtures forward to the weekend of the Wembley showdown
Barcelona and Real Madrid’s failure to progress to the Champions League final has prompted a reshuffle to the penultimate games in the Liga calendar, the Spanish league have confirmed.
Barca were dismissed from Europe’s elite club competition after they succumbed to a 7-0 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in the semi-finals, while Real Madrid bowed out at the same stage following their 4-3 overall loss to Borussia Dortmund.
Without a Spanish representative in the showpiece event at Wembley on May 25, the Liga de futbol profesional (LFP) have rescheduled domestic fixtures for that weekend.
“In line with a prevision made in the calendar… that if no Spanish team qualified for the Champions League final, the 37th round of matches, scheduled for Wednesday May 29, will be brought forward to Sunday, May 26,” the LFP said in a statement.
Week 37 sees Barcelona take on fierce local rivals Espanyol while Madrid are the visitors of Real Sociedad.
