Xabi Alonso laments defensive injuries at Real Madrid

Xabi Alonso has been left to lament the international round of fixtures after leaving Real Madrid with a catalogue of injuries to their first-team squad.

Los Blancos have suffered heavy setbacks in the full-back areas with Marcelo ruled out for up to three months, as well as Fabio Coentrao and Alvaro Arbeloa among the casualties. Sami Khedira and Gonzalo Higuain are also in need of treatment.

With the international break coming to a close, Alonso admitted with the clash against Celta Vigo in La Liga this weekend, the situation looks bleak.

“It is very bad. It is amazing that in just seven days three players have fallen,” Alonso told reporters.

“But I am sure that [Mourinho] is already working on it, it’s not my job to speculate on [possible solutions].”

In addition, Spain’s No.14 went on to address why he felt a lack of control allowed Les Bleus to come back and score a very late equaliser against them on Tuesday night in World Cup qualifying at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid.

Alonso added: “I think last night saw a lack of control as a collective. The team broke down and a goal was our punishment.”

When reporters asked why Alonso did not take the penalty, which team-mate Cesc Fabregas ultimately missed, he said: “We do not have a designated penalty taker. There were several of us yesterday and Cesc was confident.”
