The result was not unjust but Real Madrid did deserve more, insists Butragueno

Former Real Madrid player Emilio Butragueno expressed his disappointment following Sunday night’s El Clasico as he believes Jose Mourinho’s men deserved more.

In the widely anticipated clash between Spain’s two giants, both sides were left to share the spoils after Cristiano Ronaldo strike levelled matters following a double from Lionel Messi that had put the Catalans in the lead.

Butragueno felt that his former side were vastly superior in the opening period and they should have been in the lead at the break.

“We are not satisfied because we were better, there were clear occasions to score, but today they did not materialise into goals. Barcelona, however, did recover and the second half was more even,” Butrageueno was quoted by AS.

“The result was not unjust, but undeserved. We were better in the first 30 minutes, we had the chances and we were playing well. The 1-1 result at half-time did not reflect the game properly.”

The legendary striker then reserved special praise for Ronaldo – the star on the night for the visitors with two goals – while he was also impressed by Mesut Ozil who was reinstalled into the starting team for Kaka.

He added: “Cristiano was very impressive and his goals were fantastic. And the pass by Ozil for the second one was superb. He returned to the side and did well.”

Butragueno also talked about Messi’s second goal which he believes Iker Casillas could do little about in preventing while claiming Pepe was at fault for Barca’s equaliser.

“For Iker Casillas, it was very hard for him to do anything about Messi’s second goal,” he continued.

“The ball was going outside the goal before swerving back in. He did not see the ball until it passed over the wall, so very difficult for him.

“Pepe was at fault for the first goal. But, these things happen.”
