Christiano Ronaldo was the star of the show as Portugal beat the Czech Republic 1-0 to go through to the semi-finals of Euro 2012. It took Madrid’s goal machine until 12 minutes from the end of the match to score tho winner, but it was worth the wait.
It had begun to look like it was not going to happen after Portugal created a host of chances without finding the back of the net. Ronaldo himself had already hit the post twice and must have been getting frustrated.
He was determined to make his mark, though, and his movement and powerful header from a great run and cross by Joao Moutinho finally gave Portugal the lead they deserved.
Without Tomas Rosicky from Arsenal pulling the strings in midfield, the Czech Republic had to be content with containing their opponents. Petr Cech of Chelsea made some good saves and Portugal struggled to find a breakthrough until Ronaldo finally registered.
Fabio Coentrao had a fantastic game at left back and looked more like a left winger for most of the match. Maybe Jose Mourinho should only play him for Real Madrid against teams that will sit back, because he was involved in most of Portugal’s attacking play.
Pepe was solid and reliable as usual and is becoming one of the best centre backs in the world. He has controlled his aggression very well so far in the competition and hopefully will carry on next season for Madrid.
