Cristiano Ronaldo needs to show more humility, says Caparros

Joaquin Caparros has criticised Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo in the wake of his side’s 5-0 Liga defeat to the reigning champions on Sunday, as he feels the forward showed a lack of respect.

The Portugal international angered Mallorca fans by cupping his hand to his ear after scoring, and Caparros was not impressed by the former Manchester United star’s behaviour.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has it all as a footballer, but he must show a lot more humility and a lot more ambition in other areas,” Caparros said to Punto Pelota.

“His statistics are proof of what he can do, but he throws it all away with his behaviour.

“It would not surprise me if he doesn’t win the Ballon d’Or. It’s not just about footballing qualities, but a sum of a number of values. It’s the sum of a lot of things on and off the pitch.”

The shortlist for the Fifa Ballon d’Or will be revealed later on Monday.

Ronaldo keeps climbing Real Madrid scorers list as Mourinho's men match Barcelona

It was almost too easy. Real Madrid thumped a mediocre Mallorca on Sunday to match Barcelona’s 5-0 win at Rayo Vallecano and return to winning ways after losing at Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday but, as Jose Mourinho admitted afterwards, there was still something missing.

Perhaps the biggest difference of all is that, this time last year, it was Madrid – and not Barca – who were in control of La Liga. This term, however, it is the Catalans out in front following a superb start to the season and Atletico hanging on in second, with Madrid eight points adrift in fourth place.

“We are on a positive track,” Mourinho said. “Even though we lost in the Champions League. We are winning games, but we are not playing as well as we did last season.”

At the moment, that matters little. The important thing for Madrid is to remain in touch with Barca and that was all but assured from the moment Gonzalo Higuain made it 1-0 after seven minutes following a monumental mix-up in the Mallorca defence – the Argentine making a timely return to form following a frustrating few weeks.

Cristiano Ronaldo then scored the second with just 21 minutes gone with a low angled shot into the bottom corner and it was all too easy. Madrid were not playing that well, they did not need to.

Ronaldo chalked up his first assist of the season as he created Higuain’s second midway through the second half and added another minutes later as he raced through the locals’ defence before producing a slick finish to move up to joint seventh on the club’s list of all-time Liga scorers with 123 goals, alongside both Pirri and Emilio Butragueno.

There was still time for another, too, as substitute Jose Callejon became Madrid’s first Spanish scorer of the season with his last-minute strike for 5-0, a scoreline identical to Barcelona’s at Rayo Vallecano the night before.

THE TOP 10 LIGA SCORERS FOR REAL MADRID

But Madrid are still playing catch-up in the Primera Division and must now wait until the Catalans hit a rocky run of results in order to close some ground on their fiercest rivals. And that may be easier said than done because Barca have come through a defensive crisis unscathed to register their joint-best start to a season.

In order to beat Louis van Gaal’s record from 1997-98, Barca must avoid defeat at home to Celta Vigo next weekend – and will be expected to win that one comfortably against the promoted side. Madrid, meanwhile, face Zaragoza at the Santiago Bernabeu and must keep pace, even if they remain below their best.

After another goal-packed weekend in La Liga, there is no change at the top and as long as things stay as they are, Barca will be just fine with that.

Mourinho: Madrid are going in the right direction

Jose Mourinho feels Real Madrid are on the right track again after their difficult start to the 2012-13 campaign.

The reigning Liga champions beat Mallorca 5-0 at the weekend to extend their unbeaten run in the league to five games, and Mourinho remains positive that his side can get back in the title race as the season still has a long way to go.

“We’re going in the right direction. Last season we had a 10-point advantage over the second-placed team in March, and we felt that the league was still up for grabs,” Mourinho stated at a press conference.

“Now it is October and there’s not even a 10-point difference. We have eight points to make up. You have to try to keep closing the gap on the direct competition.

“I think we’re doing really well even though we lost in the last Champions League match.

“We have been winning matches since the game in Seville, although we are still not playing as great as we did for virtually the whole of last season.”

Madrid currently sit fourth in the league table with 17 points from nine games.

Higuain: Barcelona know they cannot lose

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain says his side will do everything in their power to retain La Liga after beating Mallorca 5-0 on Sunday.

The Argentine scored twice and assisted another two, as Los Blancos picked up the three points in comprehensive fashion.

Arch-rivals Barcelona remain top of the division having also recorded a 5-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano and remain eight points clear of Jose Mourinho’s side.

“It is an important win but it is just another game. Barcelona know they cannot lose,” Higuain told reporters after the game.

Team-mate Sergio Ramos was also keen to voice his pleasure with the manner of their victory, which extends Madrid’s unbeaten run in the league to five games.

“I am pleased with the result. We knew that it was going to be a difficult game and that we couldn’t waste time. We could control the match and we knew how to control each situation,” he added.

Mallorca 0-5 Real Madrid: Higuain & Ronaldo fire Los Blancos to facile win

Real Madrid got back to winning ways with a comfortable 5-0 victory over Mallorca in their La Liga clash at the Iberostar Stadium on Sunday.

After their disappointing 2-1 loss at Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League midweek, Los Blancos put in a professional performance from start to finish. Gonzalo Higuain opened the scoring with a classy finish after eight minutes, before Cristiano Ronaldo added a second goal in the 22nd minute.

The pair would come to the fore again in the second half, as Higuain slotted home the third with 20 minutes remaining, with Ronaldo drilling home the visitors’ fourth goal three minutes later.

Substitute Jose Callejon made it 5-0 with virtually the last kick of the game, as Madrid cruised to victory and moved up to fourth place in the standings, though they still trail leaders Barcelona by eight points.

With Marcelo, Fabio Coentrao and Alvaro Arbeloa all sidelined through injury, Michael Essien was chosen to start at left-back in Jose Mourinho’s depleted defence. Joaquin Capparos had no such dilemma, naming an unchanged XI from the side that went down 3-2 away to Sevilla last week.

Madrid, though, needed only eight minutes to take the lead. Angel Di Maria’s pass seemed routine for Anderson Conceicao, but the Brazilian allowed the ball to deflect into the box, where Higuain pounced on the loose ball, blasting into the back of the net with the outside of his boot.

Ronaldo also seemed eager to get in on the action early on when he went close with a pair of long-range efforts, the first smothered by Dudu Aouate, while the second flew just over the bar.

Mallorca, though, were not content to lay down and submit to Madrid, and managed to sustain a few spells of pressure in the opposition half. Emilio Nsue came closest for the home side, after he evaded Sergio Ramos on the left and clipped towards the far post, but Iker Casillas was alert to tip over.

Nsue would be made to rue that miss midway through the first half as a breathtaking move saw Madrid race into a two-goal lead. Di Maria worked the ball towards Higuain at the top of the box and the Argentine squared to Ronaldo, who turned swiftly past his marker and drilled into the bottom corner.

Though Mallorca threatened intermittently and created a few half-chances of their own, Madrid were simply flowing on the counterattack, with Mesut Ozil and Luka Modric in fine form.

The home side’s tendency to push numbers forward made them especially vulnerable on the break, and Madrid could have probably had a third goal before half-time had they been more ruthless when in sight of Aouate’s goal.

Madrid though took the foot off the gas pedal in the second half, and seemed content to hold possession and extinguish any momentum that Mallorca could muster, rather than press forward for a third goal.

There was a little more purpose and intent surrounding Caparros’ men when they advanced forward, but chances remained elusive as Madrid’s back four were able to hold firm without too much trouble.

And with the clock closing in on 70 minutes, Higuain put the result beyond any doubt, latching on to Ronaldo’s through-ball and slotting past Aouate to put the finishing touches on another superb Madrid break.

The visitors would strike another deadly blow on the counter four minutes later, and Higuain would turn provider once more, slipping in Ronaldo with a superb pass, from which the Portuguese drilled straight home.

With only seconds remaining, Callejon rounded off matters with a simple tap-in from Ozil’s cut-back, as Madrid finished in style to continue their push up the Liga table after a shoddy start to their title defence.
