Sergio Ramos & Real Madrid in ‘Final Stages’ of Negotiations Over New Contract

?Sergio Ramos is expected to agree a new contract with Real Madrid ‘in the coming weeks’, with the two parties currently negotiating the exact length of the deal.

Ramos is eager to put pen to paper on a two-year extension, which would see the 33-year-old remain at the Bernabeu until the summer of 2023. However, that would violate Real’s policy when it comes to handling contracts, with Los Blancos preferring to use rolling contracts for ageing members of their squad.

Though the Spain international has proved his fitness during the 2019/20 campaign – in which he’s made 29 appearances – ?Madrid don’t want to take risks, and would rather renew his deal on a year-by-year basis.

?Marca claim Ramos wants to commit his future to the club as soon as possible, so he can forget off-field matters and focus entirely on his performances on the pitch.

He is said to have his eyes set on representing his country at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Staying in the capital would certainly help him in that regard, allowing the veteran to continue competing at the top of the game.

Last summer, Ramos had ?looked destined to leave Madrid after falling out with club president Florentino Perez. A move to the Chinese Super League was on the cards, while several ?Major League Soccer sides were also linked with a move.

However, he decided to stay with Los Blancos, with his displays helping them open up a three-point lead over ?Barcelona at the top of ?La Liga.

Ramos has missed only two league games this season, with the defender scoring four goals in 21 appearances. He was also influential in Real’s escape from their ?Champions League group, netting in a 2-2 draw with Club Brugge and the 6-0 thrashing of Galatasaray.

They will face ?Manchester City in the round of 16, with the clubs meeting at the Santiago Bernabeu on 26 February, before the return leg on 17 March.
