Ronaldo's ambition is what keeps him at the top, says Zidane

The former France star has voiced his admiration for the prolific attacker and has hailed his determination to always try to become a better player

Zinedine Zidane says Cristiano Ronaldo’s desire to always improve is crucial to the Real Madrid star’s success.

The Portugal international has been in sublime form this season, netting 36 goals in 26 La Liga appearances, and is on track to win the European Golden Shoe for the fourth time in his career, holding a four-goal lead over second-placed Lionel Messi.

Irrespective of all his success, however, the 30-year-old continues to give his all to improve his game and Zidane has nothing but respect for last year’s Fifa Ballon d’Or winner.

“It’s his relentless desire to make progress that surprises me. At the same time, I’m not surprised,” Zidane told the official Uefa website.

“The great thing for me is that he always wants to make progress. Even if he wins trophies and scores a lot of goals every season, his aim is always to make progress.

“He always wants to show, even in training, that he wants to win. It’s incredible. That’s what makes him stay at the top – it’s his ambition to be the best.”

Ronaldo has netted 299 goals in 287 appearances in all competitions for Madrid since joining the Santiago Bernabeu side from Manchester United in 2009.

The prolific attacker will be hopeful of hitting the 300-mark in his side’s La Liga clash with Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday.
