Casillas: I'll stay at Madrid even if I'm not No.1

The Blancos are reportedly set to sign Man Utd shot-stopper David de Gea this summer but the 33-year-old captain says he will fight for his place

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas says he would not quit the club even if he loses his position as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The Spain international has spent his entire career at the Santiago Bernabeu and still has another two years to run on his contract with the European champions.

However, his form has come under increasing scrutiny in the last year and speculation is rife that Madrid will sign David de Gea from Manchester United this summer.

Casillas, though, insists he is going nowhere and claims he will not shy away from a fight for the No.1 jersey.

“I hope to fulfil my contract and a commitment that is signed has to be signed until the end,” he is quoted as saying by AS.

“But I have to earn it and train myself for it. I will strive and I will fight for the position.

“Now I am at an age at which things are seen in a different way, so if I am not the starter, I will have a commitment with the younger ones.

“Why wouldn’t I continue at Madrid if I am not the starting goalkeeper?”

For now, Casillas is concentrating on helping Madrid become the first side to successfully defend the Champions League, with Carlo Ancelotti’s men having booked their place in the last four of this year’s tournament with a 1-0 aggregate win over city rivals Atletico.

“Atletico always make it difficult, but we deserved to pass through to the next round,” the shot-stopper stated.

“Things are decided by details and you have to fight and struggle. Aside from having great players, they are a team of fight, struggle and effort.”

Madrid will have former winners Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Juventus for company in the semi-finals and Casillas thinks that there is very little to choose between the sides.

“We are talking about four great teams, four champions of Europe,” he added. “There are very nice and exciting semi-finals that lie ahead.”
