Schalke's doors are open for Khedira, says Di Matteo

The Real Madrid midfielder’s future remains the subject of speculation and the former Chelsea boss admits he is an admirer of his ability

Roberto Di Matteo says Schalke’s doors are open to Sami Khedira if the Real Madrid man wishes to join the club.

Khedira, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has been the subject of speculation for much of the campaign, with Luka Modric, Isco, James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos all ahead of him in the pecking order at Santiago Bernabeu.

Reports emerged this week to suggest Schalke had firmly entered the race to sign the Germany international and Di Matteo admits he is a big fan of the 27-year-old.

“Everyone knows he is a great player. If he wants to come, the doors are open,” he told reporters.

“Khedira is a world-class footballer.”

Earlier this week, Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt refused to be drawn in to the speculation but admitted he is exploring potential options for the summer.

“I read that we are interested in Sami, but I never get into the speculation game,” said Heldt.

“There are many interesting players in the market.”

Schalke face Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga this weekend.
