Juanfran – Atletico are the team of the humble

The right-back has responded to Sergio Ramos’ boasts by claiming that the Spanish champions are full of heart

Atletico Madrid full-back Juanfran has hit back at Sergio Ramos’ claim that Real Madrid are “God’s team” by saying that the Spanish champions are the team of the hardworking and humble.

The Madrid defender joked before his side’s 2-0 Club World Cup final victory over Argentine club San Lorenzo on Saturday that “The Pope is a San Lorenzo fan, but Madrid is God’s team”.

And Juanfran has responded by telling radio station Onda Cero that the Rojiblancos are based on far more grounded principles.

“If Real Madrid are God’s team, Atletico are the team of the humble and the hardworking and those with a lot of heart,” said the 29-year-old.

Diego Simeone’s side ended their 2014 calendar with a come-from-behind 4-1 win at Athletic Bilbao, and the full-back has hailed the progress of his side in the last 12 months while also predicting a bright future for the Primera Division champions.

“I am more about making ratings at the end of the season but 2014 has been very nice,” Juanfran added. “In any case, I think that 2015 is going to be better and Atletico are calm.

“The team is trained to be that way because of the commitment that we have, the coach, the players and the way we train. Next year will be just as good or better.”
