Varane must play more for Real Madrid, says Wenger

The Arsenal manager believes the centre-back has a bright future ahead of him, but has stressed he must play regularly in order to keep developing

Arsene Wenger has voiced his concerns over Raphael Varane’s lack of regular first-team action at Real Madrid in 2014-15.

The 21-year-old is regarded as one of the best young defenders around in Europe and Wenger believes he is destined to lead the France defence at Euro 2016.

However, Varane has made just three starts in La Liga so far this season as Carlo Ancelotti prefers Sergio Ramos and Pepe at the back and the Arsenal boss has stressed that it’s vital for the defender to play on a regular basis.

“If he doesn’t get injured, Varane will be France’s number one defender at Euro 2016,” Wenger told beIN Sports.

“He is still young though and he needs to play regularly at Real Madrid.

“At his age, he still makes mistakes that could cost the team goals.”

Varane, who joined Madrid from Lens in the summer of 2011, has a contract with the Santiago Bernabeu side until June 2020.
