Modric: Ronaldo ban is unfair

The former Tottenham star has voiced his frustration with the attacker’s three-match ban, while he feels Madrid did not really need Gareth Bale against Atletico

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric believes Cristiano Ronaldo has been unfairly punished for his red card against Athletic Bilbao.

The Portuguese attacker was slapped with a three-match ban following his dismissal at the weekend and will consequently miss the games against Villarreal, Getafe and Elche, much to the dismay of Modric.

“Cristiano’s suspension is not fair, because he didn’t do anything wrong,” the former Tottenham midfielder was quoted as saying on the official Madrid website.

“We can’t do anything about it, though. We all have to do more when Cristiano it is not playing because he is a very important player for us.”

Modric then went on to discuss the absence of Gareth Bale in Wednesday’s 3-0 Copa del Rey win over Atletico Madrid and insisted that Madrid need the Welshman more at the weekend.

“He trained normally over the last two or three days. The coach did not want him to force anything against Atletico because we have another important match on Saturday and Cristiano cannot play in it.

“It is important for him to rest because there is no rush.”

Madrid take on Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.
