Mourinho has been a scourge, says Barcelona vice-president

The Blaugrana chief has breathed a sigh of relief following Madrid’s announcement that they will part ways with the 50-year-old at the end of the season

Barcelona vice-president Carles Vilarrubi has hit out at Jose Mourinho in the wake of the announcement that the Portuguese coach will leave Real Madrid this summer and believes his exit is a positive thing for Spanish football.

Madrid president Florentino Perez revealed on Monday evening that Mourinho will not fulfil his contract with the Santiago Bernabeu side and Vilarrubi is pleased to see the 50-year-old leave La Liga at the end of this season.

“I can speak out now. Mourinho has been a scourge,” Vilarrubi told Catalunya Radio.

“Seeing him leave is a positive thing for Spanish football in my opinion because he had created a negative atmosphere.”

Mourinho joined Madrid from Inter in the summer of 2010 and has been surrounded by controversy ever since, most notably when he made the headlines for all the wrong reasons in August 2011 for poking then Barcelona assistant Tito Vilanova in the eye during a touchline brawl.

He guided los Blancos to one Liga title, one Copa del Rey and one Spanish Supercopa during his three-year spell in charge of the club, but failed to steer them to Champions League glory.
