Godin: Copa del Rey final is 50-50

The Uruguayan defender is adamant his side can triumph at the Santiago Bernabeu, despite failing to beat their arch-rivals in any competition since 1999

Atletico Madrid may not have defeated Real Madrid for 14 years, but Diego Godin insists that los Rojiblancos have a “50-50” chance of winning Friday night’s Copa del Rey final.

Even though Atletico have improved immeasurably since the arrival of Diego Simeone as coach midway through last season, they remain seemingly incapable of beating their city rivals, having lost both of their meetings in La Liga this season.

However, when it was put to Godin during an interview with Fifa.com that his side have little chance of breaking the hoodoo at the Santiago Bernabeu on Friday night, the Uruguayan replied: “I don’t agree with that at all.

“In a one-off game, the two teams go in with the same possibilities. Of course Madrid, on paper, are the favourites, but at the outset, the chances of both teams are 50-50.”

Indeed, Godin insisted that Simeone’s troops will not be weighed down by the burden of history when they take to the field to face los Blancos.

“We aren’t looking back,” the defender insisted. “The statistics are clear but we’re a different squad, we’re in good form and we have high hopes of going there and winning, the same as Madrid do.”

Godin also said that he has little interest in the alleged dressing-room unrest at Madrid, with coach Jose Mourinho reported to have fallen out with a number of key players, including captain Iker Casillas.

“I’m not worried about them,” the 27-year-old centre-back declared. “The only thing I’m concerned about is the final.

“For how ever many problems they have, they all know how to go out on the pitch and play.”

Atletico’s meeting with Mourinho’s men is scheduled to get under way in the Spanish capital at 21:30BST.
