Godin: Atletico Madrid can challenge Barcelona & Real Madrid

Diego Godin believes that Atletico Madrid have what it takes to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid for the Liga title this term, despite the immense difference in budget.

The Colchoneros currently sit second in the Primera Division table, three points behind leaders Barca, but five points ahead of arch-rivals Real Madrid, and Godin is confident that they can compete with the two traditional Spanish powerhouses.

“On paper, it seems impossible for Atletico to compete with Barca or Madrid. It’s very difficult due to their track record in recent years and their budgets,” Godin was quoted as saying on the official Fifa website.

“However, at this moment, we can challenge for the league title. We can compete with anyone. It’s no coincidence that we sit second in the league table.

“We’ll just have to see where we are at the end of the season. We’re going to keep fighting to win one game at a time without thinking any further ahead.”

Atletico lock horns with Sevilla at the weekend as they aim to keep up with league-leaders Barcelona.
