Real Madrid’s sports betting odds are directly tied with the fortunes of Cristiano Ronaldo, and while the speedy forward has been relatively injury free throughout his career, he is a worry for “Los Merengues” as they prepare for Wednesday’s massive Champions League clash with Lyon at the Bernabeu.
Ronaldo has 37 goals in 39 appearances for Madrid this season, but he’s been out with the past two matches because of a muscular injury suffered in a 7-0 thrashing of Malaga on March 3rd. Madrid hasn’t needed him, as they’ve won 3-1 at Racing Santander and a 2-0 victory over Hercules, but they’ll face a tougher task against the French giants on Wednesday. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw at the Stade de Gerland, but it could have gone differently if a Ronaldo free kick hadn’t crashed off the crossbar. Manager Jose Mourinho believes that Ronaldo will be ready to go on Wednesday, and when he is in the side, Madrid is a different team. He’s one of the few players in the world who can win a game by himself, and games like these are the reason why Madrid paid Manchester United over $130 million for the Portuguese superstar, and with the extra time to rest after his injury, Ronaldo should be in the lineup for Madrid.
Lyon president Jean Michel Aulas thinks that Madrid, who have an away goal, will sit back and defend their slight lead, but Madrid is a different side at home, and they’ll be motivated by last year’s loss to Lyon at this stage of the Champions League. Look for Ronaldo to come out strong and see plenty of the ball in the early stages as Madrid look to set Lyon on the back foot, and they should go through to the next round.
